Are you entering the building and construction industry? Then you will be installing custom dry walls gutters, fiberglass roofing, windows, doors, window blinds, wind guards, and kitchen cabinets, all tasks requiring rivets and experience using a rivet gun.

You will need to know the difference between, electrical, pneumatic rivet, and manual guns and how to use them. Here is a table that provides a visual summary of the three rivet guns most often used. We have also compiled a guide that provides detailed steps on using each rivet gun type.

Manual RivetDIY projects, light repairs, and small-scale useAffordable, portable, and simplephysically demanding
PneumaticAuto repair, HVAC, and heavy machinery.Reduces fatigueRapid and consistent
ElectricalFieldwork, on-site installationsFast and efficientExpensive

Most rivet guns have two structures: a nozzle and a jaw assemblage behind the nozzle. This mechanism grips the mandrel (the long stem of the rivet) and pulls it through the rivet body. When this happens repeatedly, the mandrel breaks off, creating a secure join.

Cómo utilizar una remachadora eléctrica

Electric rivet guns are powered by batteries. They come with or without a mandrel holder. If there’s no mandrel holder, the gun drops the mandrel out of the nosepiece. If there is one, the gun pulls the mandrel into the mandrel holder or catch, which speeds up rivet installations but can also jam the catch..

The gun contains a cartridge for the battery. The tool also has a charging slot to charge the rivet tool battery.

Nota de precaución:

  • Remove the battery before starting to clean the tool.
  • Empty the mandrel collector regularly; don’t let the mandrel holder fill up with waste pieces.
  • Check the rivet gun motor regularly. Make sure it runs smoothly within ideal operational temperatures.

Guía paso a paso para operar una remachadora eléctrica:

Paso 1: Elija el remache adecuado

Select the correct size and type of rivet for your project. The rivet material and the materials you want to join must be the same.

Paso 2: Preparar los materiales

Drill a hole through both materials the same diameter as the rivet shaft and align the materials the how want to join them.

Paso 3: Insertar el remache

Push the mandrel into the nozzle of the electric rivet gun and insert the short, wider part of the rivet (the body) into holes you aligned.

Paso 4: Asegure la remachadora

Hold the rivet gun firmly with one hand and press the rivet head flush against the material, with the rivet sitting snug in the hole.

Paso 5: Aprieta el gatillo

Squeeze the trigger to activate the electric motor, which pulls the mandrel back, compressing the rivet and enlarging it so it can’t loosen. When the rivet is set, the mandrel will snap off, and the tool will automatically reset itself for the next rivet.

Paso 6: Compruebe el remache

Inspect the join to see if it’s secure, and whether the rivet head is flush with the surface. Discard the broken mandrel pieces.

Cordless rivet guns are widely used in the automotive industry. MaxXT manufactures and supplies wholesale cordless rivet guns for automotive works.

Cómo utilizar una remachadora neumática

Pneumatic rivet guns are used in industrial or construction environments where high-volume riveting is often the order of the day. These tools use compressed air to propel the rivets fast, speeding up the riveting process. Because they are powerful and fast, pneumatic rivet guns help reduce manual labor and don’t require much physical exertion.

Using compressed air to propel the rivets, these tools significantly increase productivity on site. In addition, they are equipped with waste collection units inside, so they can automatically get rid of the core bar debris.

A large volume of riveting is needed for automobile manufacturing, aircraft assembly, and home appliance manufacturing. Pneumatic rivet guns are ideally suited for this purpose, enabling operators to complete loads of rivets in a short time.

Velocidad del arma

Pneumatic rivet guns come in three hitting speeds: Slow-hitting, Fast-hitting, and one-shot-hitting.

Slow-hitting guns produce around 2,500-blows per minute (bpm), striking heavy blows. They are used with medium-sized rivets. These rivet guns are simple to operate and ideal for first-time users.

Fast-hitting guns are best for soft rivets made of soft aluminum alloy. They also strike around 2,500 to 5,000 bpm, but the blows are lighter and faster.

One-shot guns are ideal for heavy-gauge metals. One-shot guns strike one forceful blow every time you squeeze the trigger. Use a one-shot gun for delicate operations with materials like aluminum sheet metal that can’t withstand repeated blows.

Guía paso a paso para operar una remachadora neumática

Paso 1. Elija el remache y la boquilla de pistola adecuados.

Choose your rivet and gun nozzle according to the thickness of the materials you plan to join. Attach the selected nozzle to the rivet gun. Ensure the nozzle clamps the rivet mandrel properly. This is important because a poorly fitting nozzle and rivet can cause the rivet to jam.

Paso 2. Ajuste la presión del aire

The air pressure {PSI) you choose will depend on the rivet size you’re using. The bigger your rivet, the more air pressure you need. For example, a 3⁄32 inch (0.24 cm) rivet requires 25 PSI, a 1⁄8 inch (0.32 cm) rivet requires 40 PSI, and a 5⁄32 inch (0.40 cm) rivet requires 60 PSI.

If you’re working with different rivet sizes, you’ll have to change the air pressure accordingly.

Paso 3. Preparar los materiales

Align the materials that you want to join, clamp them together and drill a hole through both the materials. The hole should be slightly bigger than the diameter of the rivet’s body. Clean the edges of the hole.

Paso 4. Elija la boquilla adecuada

Make sure the nozzle and the size of the rivet match. The nozzle should clamp the rivet mandrel firmly.

Paso 5. Inserte el remache

Insert the rivet mandrel into the nozzle of the rivet gun, with the wider and shorter part sticking out. Insert it in the hole of the material to be connected.

Paso 6. Presione el gatillo

Hold the rivet gun perpendicular to the surface and carefully press the rivet gun trigger. Compressed air enters the rivet gun chamber, driving a piston that pulls the mandrel tight, causing the rivet’s body to expand and the materials to hold firmly in place.

Paso 7: El mandril se rompe

At some point, the pressure becomes too much and the mandrel breaks off. The remainder of the mandrel automatically collects in a holder for later recycling.

Paso 8: Suelte el gatillo

When the rivet mandrel breaks off release the trigger. At this point, the piston inside the rivet gun will automatically reset to continue with the riveting.

Paso 9: Verificar la unión

When done, inspect the rivet:

  • Is it flush with the surface?
  • Will it hold?
  • Does the tail end of the rivet expand properly

Paso 10. Deshacerse de los residuos

If the rivet gun doesn’t have a waste collection system, collect it manually so it doesn’t pose a safety hazard where you and others work.

Preparativos

Choose your blind rivets according to the thickness and strength of the materials you want to connect, such as wood or aluminum. Your decision on the hole size will determine the drill bit size you need. Remember the hole should always be slightly bigger (0.1-0.2 millimeters) than the rivet’s diameter. The rivet must pass through but not fall through.

After drilling the hole, clean away the burrs and iron chips that tend to collect around the hole. Ensure the edges are smooth to facilitate successful riveting. Once that’s done, you can proceed to secure the rivet.

Cómo utilizar una remachadora manual

Paso 1. Perforar agujeros

Drill holes into to the two materials you want to join – they can be metal, wood, or plastic.

Paso 2. Alinea los agujeros

Align the two holes in the way you want the two materials to be joined.

Paso 3. Coloque el remache

Put the rivet into the nozzle, with the mandrel (the long stem) inside the nozzle and the rivet body sticking out.

Paso 4. Pase el remache por los agujeros.

Take hold of the gun and maneuver the rivet body through the pre-drilled holes. The rivet’s body is the short part, and it’s hollow.

Paso 5. Presione la pistola firmemente

Make sure the rivet goes through both materials and press the gun against the two materials. Hold firmly.

Paso 6. Apriete las manijas de la pistola

Squeeze the handles of the gun together. When you do this, the jaw assemblage grips the mandrel and pulls it away from the rivet’s body. This force causes the rivet’s body to deform and become wider.

Paso 7. El mandril se rompe.

Keep squeezing the handle until the mandrel breaks off. By then, the rivet’s body will be completely deformed and stuck in place.

Paso 8. Suelte el gatillo

Release the trigger on the gun as soon as the mandrel breaks off. Discard the remainder of the mandrel.

A rivet gun is not a tool you can let lie around unattended. It’s a tool that needs regular attention to work properly. The way to do that is to inspect each rivet gun part separately. A rivet gun that is not maintained properly, can develop numerous issues, including jamming, excessive noise or vibration, trigger issues, and inconsistent riveting.

Tres problemas comunes con las remachadoras y cómo solucionarlos

1. Interferencia

The most common problem that everyone experiences at some point in time is jamming. A jammed rivet gun can be the result of:

  • Clogged nozzle
  • Wrong-sized rivets
  • Wrongly placed rivets in the gun nozzle
  • Worn or damaged mechanical parts inside the rivet gun jaws, such as the springs
  • Rivet gun isn’t properly lubricated

Solve the issue by using the correct rivet size, clean the nozzle and jaws regularly, always inserting the rivets carefully, inspecting and replacing internal parts as necessary, lubricating the rivet gun often, and checking the air pressure of pneumatic rivet guns.

2. Liberación anticipada del mandril de la remachadora

A rivet gun releasing the mandrel before the rivet is fully tensioned is a common problem caused by:

  • Worn or damaged jaws that can’t grip properly
  • Pneumatic or electric rivet guns may be set to a tension level that’s too low.
  • A faulty trigger or internal spring

Solve the problem by replacing the jaws if necessary, adjusting the tension settings, and checking that the trigger mechanism and internal spring are functioning correctly.

3. Problemas de deslizamiento de la mandíbula

If the rivet gun’s jaws are slipping and don’t grip the mandrel firmly, the riveting can’t be completed properly because the rivet is not pulled tight. The common problem can be the result of:

  • Worn or misaligned jaws
  • Dirt and debris inside the jaws
  • A worn or broken jaw spring
  • Incorrect rivet size
  • Poor lubrication
  • Improper jaw installation

Solve the problem by often cleaning the jaw mechanism, replacing worn components, always using correct-sized rivets, and installing the jaws properly.

Tip: Most of the problems with rivet guns can be solved with two simple steps:

  • Always use the correct rivet sizes.
  • Regularly inspect and clean the jaws and replace worn parts.
